 Russian Space Pencil - Thumbs Down!...
The FAQ's from thewritersedge.com explains this. The pens were developed at no cost to NASA by Mr. Fisher of Fisher Space Pens. And broken pencil lead was very dangerous in zero gravity, leading the Russians to switch to the Fisher Space Pens as well.
